New Car Parts Facility

HMF were asked by Hendy Group, one of the UK’s largest car dealers, to come up with a design for relocating a parts distribution centre in Wallisdown, Dorset.

HMF visited the new site and carried out a survey of the building. HMF then provided both plans and elevations of the building and a new design to use the available dead space within the centre of the building for fitting a storage platform.

The facility required new parts offices and an area along one side of the building was designed as an open plan office with additional individual offices and remodelled welfare facilities. A new trade counter area was also specified which involved the conversion of the existing reception area to a trade parts area with new trade counter.

The parts department itself was designed with various sizes and depths of shelving and racking to store either very small parts in blue plastic bins or small, medium, large and very large parts.

HMF specified the Dexion Hi280 bolt-free shelving system throughout the parts department as well as some Dexion LS3 Longspan shelving complete with metal shelves.

Once a final design was agreed and approved HMF submitted a Building Control application for the changes to the building and also carried out a structural survey to enable part of the building’s existing steelwork to be removed and additional trimming steelwork added and then fire rated to compensate for the steelwork changes.

Once statutory approvals were in place HMF prepared a programme of works on a gant chart and scheduled the project to be installed in a fast track installation sequence. HMF undertook the CDM safety plan to ensure that all directly employed HMF installers as well as nominated sub-contractors were kept safe.

The work commenced with the initial demolition and strip out works; this was then followed by the new mezzanine steelwork.

Once the mezzanine floor was in place Hampshire Mezzanine constructed the new offices with steel stud partitioning and suspended ceilings and at the same time remodelled and refurbished the welfare facilities including providing a new DDA compliant toilet facility. New mechanical installations were provided by HMF on the project to include energy efficient inverter heat pump air conditioning systems and also heat recovery ventilation systems.

The electrical installation was amended by HMF with new electrical power and LED energy efficient lighting and emergency lighting. The installation was then taped and jointed, plastered and decorated and once the storage equipment had been delivered and installed, the new offices and welfare facilities received new flooring with heavy duty contract grade carpet tiles fitted to the offices and non-slip vinyl to the welfare and wet areas.

The project totalled £320K and was completed on programme and also within budget and Hendy Group relocated their parts operation into the new facilities.
